My Favorite Primal Breakfast

Here’s a quick & easy primal breakfast you can make.   And it has the added bonus of being super tasty and healthy.  Importantly, you can and should switch up the ingredients whenever you feel like it.   Variation is good.   Here’s what mine looked like this morning:

We always make enough for two, for me and Antonie.  I’d say these smoothies are my favorite breakfast, even if I were to include non-primal options.   I bet you’ll love them too.

For the Blender:
Mixed berries
Strawberries
Banana
Egg
Milk
Whey Protein
BCAA Powder
Water

On the side:
Banana
Egg
Avocado

Experiment.   Toss in whatever you want, or whatever happens to be on sale at the store.  Frozen berries are essential for me — we always have blueberries in the freezer too — and I like to buy huge bags for cheap.   Costco and Sam’s Club have great deals, and so do Target and Wal-Mart.   (By contrast, Whole Foods is just awful.   You get a tiny little bag for like five bucks.)   I toss a raw egg into the smoothie and bring a hard boiled egg (or two) with me to work.

You can use water instead of milk if you want, but I like the taste and texture that milk provides.   Antonie and I have gone back and forth on milk consumption.   Before going paleo, we drank 2-3 gallons a week.   Then we cut it out completely and switched to almond milk.   Now we have both in the frig.  Personally, I like the proteins and fats that come with regular milk (and the taste!) so I’m using it again for smoothies and post-workout meals.   I’ll cut it out for the month leading up to my BJJ tournament because I want to drop weight and milk isn’t good for weight loss.

The supplements are optional.   We got our big bag of whey protein from Costco and it seems to be lasting quite a long time.  The BCAA we picked up on amazon based on Art De Vany‘s recommendation in his excellent book The New Evolution Diet.   I won’t go into supplements in detail here, though, instead I’ll leave that for another post.

Bottom line:   Get a blender if you don’t have one.   They’re cheap on amazon, and they make it incredibly easy to prepare quick, inexpensive & tasty breakfasts that are 100% in compliance with your Primal Challenge.

  2. I am on my way to the store. I will try it tomorrow morning! It is a perfect time for me to get in a new routine, since classes start tomorrow and I will now have a consistent schedule again. Thanks for the idea!

  3. Bob, what is BCAA powder, or could you reply with a link to the amazon product?

Amazon.com has a 100% pure Whey Protein Isolate from NOW foods that’s comparatively cheap and has no added ingredients. I use this for my morning smoothies, and I also sometimes toss in some 100% cacao powder… Great post!

  8. Here’s another great primal breakfast: Almond Flour pancakes with apples sauteed in coconut oil! Yum! This one takes a little more time so it is great for a Saturday or Sunday morning. Hope you enjoy the recipe:

I do accept as true with all the concepts you have introduced on your post.
They’re very convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are too quick for newbies. May you please extend them a bit from next time? Thank you for the post.

I’m really impressed with your writing skills and also with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself? Either way keep up the nice quality writing, it is rare to see a great blog like this one these days.
