Get this Knife: Victorinox 40520 Fibrox 8-Inch Chef’s Knife

That was my brother Scott’s recommendation.   He came out to visit in March — we ran the National Marathon together (pictures here) — and he was shocked by how bad our knives were.   Well, I finally took his recommendation and picked up a Victorinox Chef’s Knife off amazon.

Check out the difference between the new knife and the old one:

Granted, that old knife was cheap and overused.   But still, the difference is dramatic.   What knives do you use?  Any other recommendations?  I’ve got tons to learn when it comes to cooking, so advice is most appreciated.

The Victorinox knife I just bought is on sale now at amazon for $25.83.

I recently purchased the Wusthof Classic Gourmet series knives and I love them. They’re pretty pricey but if you use them as much as I do it is worth the investment. I compared several on this site and found it to be quite useful!

Thanks Bridget! I’m new to cooking, so this knife is a big step for me. I look forward to learning more from experts like you, and growing in my kitchen skills.

I’ve got that one shun knife from the photo. It is AWESOME. Heavy enough to dismantle a pineapple or a butternut squash in no time but light and sharp enough to slice chives or pit a tomato. With that and a sharpening steel I haven’t needed a second knife. And the Damascus bands on the blade make you feel badass.

Just don’t try to get into a coconut with the thing. Long story.

Wait till you start slicing up big hunks of meat for jerky!

    • Bob Ewing says:

I cut up all the jerky for the climbing trip with this knife. And we didn’t even eat it all! Next time we’re both in town together, lets definitely do a jerky showdown.

The Victorinox Fibrox Chef knife weighs only 6.25 ounces, versus the 8.5 to 9.0 ounce weights that typify forged German knives, but the lighter weight feels comfortable and nimble, rather than flimsy. It’s absolutely the best Chef’s knife there is for $25!
